LEgo after school classes at North Ainslie

Canberra Youth Theatre

Canberra Youth Theatre is a not-for-profit youth theatre company that produces theatre with young people at its heart, and offers drama workshops and development opportunities for young people aged 7-25.
At North Ainslie Primary School, we provide weekly after school programs for young people in years 2-6 as part of our Schools Program. We encourage young people to explore their imagination and work collaboratively with each other and their tutor as a creative team on a devised or existing theatre piece that implements their skills to perform at the end of the semester for family and friends.

NAPS Chess Club

The aim of the club is to let children play competitive chess in a supportive environment. All squad members already know the rules of chess. Most kids also play outside of the club and broaden their knowledge by reading chess books and using on-line resources.
Each session we play two games using chess clocks and following tournament rules. The results are entered into a chess tournament program that does the pairings and maintains a leaderboard. On average, we play one tournament per term. My motto is ‘let them play’ and I have a very light touch on teaching a few basic stratagems, or preferably asking the kids to find out more by themselves.
Each year, squad members participate in the interschool zone tournament. as well as the girl’s interschool tournament. If we qualify, a NAPS team participates in the ACT finals.

Chess is a world game that has many benefits, such as developing patience, strategy and learning how to deal with pressure. I am hoping that the kids catch the chess bug and become a player for life.
